Our Water Safety & Drowning Prevention Campaign

At Tom Dean Swim School, we believe swimming is more than just a sport — it’s a life skill.

That’s why we’ve launched a major water safety and drowning prevention campaign, working in partnership with the Royal Life Saving Society UK.

Our goal is simple but powerful:
to reach 1 million people with water safety awareness.

What we’re doing

  • Taking water safety into schools
We already have 50 schools booked across York, Maidenhead, Windsor, Slough, Warrington, Hull and Birtley — reaching 10,000+ young people through live assemblies.
  • Educating through our swim lessons
Over 5,000 Tom Dean Swim School members will take part in dedicated water safety sessions in the pool.
  • Free summer swimming for teens
Working with our pool partners, we’re offering free swimming for 13–17 year olds — helping keep young people safe and away from open water risks.
  • Live rescue demonstrations
Hosting a real-life water rescue demo with the local fire service in Maidenhead, in front of 600 children — showing exactly what to do (and what not to do) in an emergency.
  • Sharing expert guidance
Alongside the Royal Life Saving Society, we’re delivering trusted water safety content to schools, families and across social media.
  • Working with local businesses
We’re teaming up with local partners to spread the message through videos, posters and community campaigns.

Water Safety

Keep Your Family Safe Around Open Water This Summer

  •  Rivers, lakes and canals can look calm — but the water can be dangerous
  • Cold water shock can affect even strong swimmers within seconds
  • Hidden currents, deep water and underwater hazards are often impossible to see
  • Never encourage children or teenagers to swim in open water unsupervised
  • Choose supervised swimming pools and organised sessions instead
  • Talk to your children about the dangers before the summer holidays begin
  • Don’t follow friends into the water because of dares or social media trends
  • If it doesn’t feel safe — stay out

If You See Someone In Trouble In The Water

  •  Call 999 immediately and ask for the Fire Brigade or Coastguard if near the coast
  • Never jump into the water to rescue somebody — you could become another victim
  • Shout reassurance and encourage the person to float on their back
  • Look for nearby rescue equipment such as throw lines, lifebuoys or reach poles
  • Throw rescue equipment from a safe distance if possible
  • Keep yourself safe while helping others
  • Try to guide emergency services clearly to the exact location

Simple Water Safety Reminder

  •  Stop and think
  • Stay together
  • Float if you fall in
  • Call 999 in an emergency
